Orbost Community College offers students the opportunity to undertake short-term work placements, providing employability skills and potential career options.

Overview

Year 10 students are required to complete work experience, teaching them skills for the future. Some students, under the guidance of our staff, choose to study one VCE or VET subject.

Structured Workplace Learning

Structured workplace learning provides students with the opportunity to:

- integrate practical on-the-job experience and learning in workplaces with nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) undertaken as part of the VCE, the VCE Vocational Major or the Victorian Pathways Certificate

undertake work placement to complement an applied learning program as part of the VCE Vocational Major or the Victorian Pathways Certificate

At Orbost Community College we work closely with a wide range of local employers to provide structured workplace learning opportunities for our students. Many of these placements transition to School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and ultimately full apprenticeships. A significant number of our students utilise this pathway to become fully qualified tradespeople.

Work Experience

Work experience (WE) is the short-term placement of secondary school students, generally during Years 9 and 10, with employers to provide insights into industry and the workplace. It provides students with the valuable opportunity to:

- develop employability skills
- explore potential career options
- understand workplace expectations

increase self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.

At Orbost Community College we have a “Work Experience Week” in Term 4 for Year 10 students. Using the results of their Morrisby testing, combined with personal strengths and aspirations, students are supported to arrange a week of work experience in a field of interest. The local business community has and continues to be very supportive of this program. Head Start School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs)

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs) are an employment-based learning pathway that you can take during your secondary schooling. You will combine your senior school years with paid part-time employment and skills training in your chosen field.
